Hello there! My name is Sheila. I’m a very new Registered Nurse searching for my first job/taking a break from searching for my first job. This seemed like the perfect time in life to take an adventure-with-a-purpose.
I first became interested in immigration issues when I was working in a health clinic for low-income clients and an undocumented gentlemen came in seeking services. Although this clinic’s mission was to provide care to the poor and marginalized, this man was turned away because he didn’t have a social security number and thus wouldn’t register in the clinic’s computer system. As he left the clinic, downtrodden but still with hope in his eyes, I realized that he was just one member of a huge group of the population that is turned away, marginalized, and overlooked each day despite being full of intelligence, character, and capabilities, and solely for the lack of some 9 digit ID number.
Or maybe I became interested in immigration when my friend Peter simply asked me to come to a New Sanctuary Movement meeting. Sometimes that’s all it takes…
Or maybe it was when I thought of the issues logically and realized how insane it is that a country composed predominately of immigrants can be so forgetful of its recent past and so quick to repeat past mistakes.
Sheila!
This looks so amazing.
You have done a terrific job putting together your website. Thank you for forwarding me an email about your blog, I will be so excited to read about the trip as you go on your way. I hope you have either a digital camera or a host of throw aways so that you can document all of the amazing places you see and people you meet!
Best Wishes,
Tanya

Hi, my husband and I are involved with immigration rights in upstate New York, rural America. We are interested in your trip, as we are bicyclers also.
And to top that off, I am a friend of your brother, having been his mentor at RIT. And I am a documentary film maker with a film about 5 immigrant farm worker women. I am very excited for your cause, and would love to support what you are doing.

We chatted on your way to Suffolk, had a turkey observing us from the road. You do have a lot of flat road in front of you now. When your route veers SW I just don’t know. South AL, MS and LA will be flat, too.

Peace and Blessings,
